Bosnia & Herzegovina are back on the world's biggest football stage. It's been 12 years since their miraculous win in Brazil and the Dragons have booked a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 in the most dramatic way possible - beating four-time world champions Italy with penalties. As the progresses, here's all the information you need.
Football: 65th (April 2026)
Head Coach: Sergej Barbarez
Hamburger's former Bundesliga star 54, who had the best of his career in the Bundesliga at Hamburger SV and Borussia Dortmund, took over in April 2024 as the boss, but without any senior management experience. Skeptics were plentiful. The results spoke louder.
Barbarez prefers a 4-2-3-1 formation that is built on intensity of play, good pressing and fast vertical passing after winning possession. Instead of playing a long game from the back, his Bosnia side are focused on getting the ball forward straight away — something which works well in the direct running of Ermedin Demirović, and with the airy threat of Edin Džeko.
After narrowly missing out in UEFA World Cup Qualifying Group H for automatic qualification with Austria, Bosnia went through a 2-legged playoff that will be remembered for generations. In 20 games, the team was able to record a 40% win rate under Barbarez, although it wasn't much, the peaks at the right time.
The journey to the FIFA Club World Cup 2026 was a roller coaster ride for Bosnia all the way.
In a Group H which they failed to qualify for automatic, Bosnia then took part in the UEFA playoffs, a group which included two tough two-legged group stages with other similarly droughted teams hoping to get to North America.
It was a nervous draw against Bosnia and Wales in an empty-10ed affair, which saw the match reach the penalty area. The nerves held. Bosnia were able to convert their kicks, while Wales could not. This placed it in the final of a playoff with the opposition that could have been.
Between Bosnia and the World Cup was Italy, four-time world champions, one of the most iconic countries in European football. It was then a draw to extra time after a late Haris Tabaković equaliser, but neither side could get the lead in the added 30 minutes. It was taken down with penalties. Bosnia converted four. Italy missed twice. The national team went into an ecstasy last when 21-year-old Esmir Bajraktarević of PSV Eindhoven converted a penalty.

Edin Džeko netted six goals in the qualification round, among them a late equalizer in the semi-final with Wales, which saved a Bosnia dream.
Bosnia & Herzegovina are now in Group B with co-hosts Canada and Switzerland & 2022 World Cup hosts Qatar. All three group stage matches will be in North American prime time.

Group B breakdown:
The two best teams in Group B will advance to the Round of 32. With 48 teams involved, there will be some third-placed teams advancing, which could leave four points adequate for Bosnia to remain in the tournament.
Bosnia & Herzegovina only began competing as an independent nation in 1995, following the dissolution of Yugoslavia. Their path to the global stage was slow but ultimately triumphant.
World Cup Record at a Glance:
| Tournament | Appearances | Best Result | Notes |
| 1930–1990 | Part of Yugoslavia | — | Bosnian players represented Yugoslavia |
| 1995–2013 | 0 | — | Multiple near-misses in qualifying |

The first time Bosnia played in a World Cup as an independent team was in Brazil's Group F, a steaming pile of Argentina, Nigeria and Iran. The tournament was painfully started, as these two sides linked up on a controversial own goal in the opening game, with Argentina coming out victorious 2-1, and Nigeria getting a goalscoring chance 1-0 in the second game which was denied by niggling offside calls.
However, in their final group match they did not go away lightly, as Bosnia signed off with a statement. The win over Iran was 3-1 and saw Bosnian goals from Džeko, Miralem Pjanić and Avdija Vršajević, and it had left people around the world with a strong impression of Bosnian football at its best.
A sad finish... out in the group stage, but had a few moments of good form - but it sowed a seed for the generation to come.
The Near-Misses
Bosnia narrowly missed out on the World Cup a number of times prior to 2014. They made it to the UEFA playoff for the 2010 World Cup and lost on the away goals 2-0 on the away goal to Portugal. They had drawn Spain in the 2006 season and in all the qualifying matches they continued to cause problems for high-profile European sides, leaving their game-level to be underestimated in the rankings system.
There's no player like to define Bosnian football more completely. Now 40, and still playing football for Schalke 04 in Germany, after spells at Manchester City, Roma and Inter Milan, Džeko is still the captain and talisman of the Bosnian team; he has scored 73 goals for Bosnia, with 148 caps, both of which are national records.
He's been proving that his powers haven't deserted him in this campaign, as he has six goals in six games in the process of reaching the final. He may be a question-marker for retirement after this World Cup but Džeko, who will be 40 at next week's start, is definitely his last.
Stuttgart's Ermedin Demirović is the perfect foil for Džeko - quick on his feet, direct, and fast explosive. He has been a regular second striker or wide attacker and is an integral part of Barbarez's philosophy of playing Bosnia. He looks at his peak at 26 years of age and comes into this tournament at or near his peak.
Benjamin Tahirović is the one who gives shape and drive to this Bosnia side – their ball-winning and progressive passing is a key to their engine room. He and midfielder Armin Gigović are among the lesser known midfield duos coming into the tournament.
PSV Eindhoven 21-year-old winger Esmir Bajraktarević was a national hero as soon as he brought Italy to the edge of the box and put the game into the hands of the Dutchman. Young, fast and technically talented, he is the most promising player for the next 10 years in Bosnia. If he is playing in the World Cup he will get a lot of interest from the clubs.
has experience and aerial dominance to bring to the backline, as he is one of just two players, with Džeko, to have featured for Bosnia in both the 2014 and 2026 World Cups. He is 33 now, and is a vital bridge between generations.
The team of Bosnia are the clear-cut representatives of the FIFA World Cup 2026. They're big, defensively organized when they need to be, and have some goal threat in the form of Džeko and Demirović. Their set-piece performance - set pieces and defending crosses - is a weapon they can use on any day against any opponent. And importantly, they have demonstrated that they can take pressure. It is not a matter of luck when Wales and Italy are beaten on penalties. It is nerve and preparation.
The team is lacking in depth. The options for Bosnia beyond the first 11 are few, and the health of a 40-year-old captain – no matter how brilliant – is always a minor worry on a short and compact group stage. The encounter with a well-organized Switzerland, a side who, as other teams know, are capable of producing big performances at big events, could be the deciding match for the fate of Bosnia at the group stage.
Switzerland are the favorites to lead the group. Canada being co-hosts will have energy and a crowd backing them. Resilience and tournament pedigree will give Bosnia a decent chance of being a second place contender. There's no doubt that Qatar, though technically weak, is one of the goals Bosnia should try to score on, as they could be a big threat with points.
If Bosnia get through the group stage it will be their biggest success in football history. A 48-team World Cup run through to the Round of 16, for just two tours of duty, would be a watershed moment for a country that has long been toiling for a breakthrough into the top-tier of European football.

Former Bosnian international and Bundesliga hero Sergej Barbarez is in charge. In April 2024, he was appointed and led the team to a dramatic playoff qualification campaign.
Bosnia were runner-ups in UEFA Qualifying Group H, and advanced to playoffs. In the semi-final they won on penalties and in the final they had to go to extra-time thanks to Haris Tabaković' score and then they used penalties to beat Italy.
Edin Džeko is the top scorer in Bosnia's history, having scored 73 times in 148 appearances for the country. He scored just six goals in the qualifying season of 2026.
The first round-robin game will be between co-hosts Canada and Bosnia, at 3:00 PM ET on June 12, 2026 at BMO Field in Toronto.
Bosnia's best World Cup performance was at Brazil 2014 where they managed to make it to the round of 16 after defeating Iran in their third and final group stage fixture 3-1.
Edin Džeko is the captain and record scorer but the most dynamic player in the present team of the Republic of Bosnia is probably Ermedin Demirović who plays for the Stuttgart team. Esmir Bajraktarević has been considered the most promising young winger in the country
